Welcome to the National Finals!

Hosted by British Council in partnership with Junior Achievement Azerbaijan the national finals of Skills@Work Challenge competition will take place on January 27 at the Grand Hotel Europe.
The event starts at 10 am in the Baku Room and brings together 100 students from 11 vocational and technical colleges to compete on providing the best solution to a proposed business challenge.  All media agencies are invited to attend the event.
Skills@Work is a project that promotes internationalism within the vocational education and training sector across 18 countries in South East Europe and the UK. “What we want to achieve with Skills@Work is to address long-term systemic challenges by engaging employers in the future of skills development to align education and training provision with the needs of industry” says Director of British Council in Azerbaijan Nicole la Hausse de Lalouvière.
Conducted as a joint initiative between British Council and Junior Achievement Young Enterprise, the Skills@Work Challenge is a national and international competition to encourage young people to use their skills in enterprising and innovative ways, ultimately increasing their employability and entrepreneurial flair. This year competition is held simultaneously in nine countries in South East Europe and the UK.
Vusal Khanlarov, Executive Director, Junior Achievement Azerbaijan noted that in Azerbaijan the contest started in October 2008, involving more than 300 students from Baku, Sumgayit, Ganja, Guba, Mingechevir and Lenkaran to examine entrepreneurial and teamwork skills. 20 teams progressed to the finals, where they will develop business ideas and present their solutions to a jury. The jury panel consisting of business representatives will evaluate the proposed ideas according to their feasibility, innovativeness and team’s presentation skills. The winning team will get an opportunity to participate at the Regional Skills@Work Challenge competition to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria on March 12, 2009.
Junior Achievement Azerbaijan and British Council would like to thank Microsoft for sponsorship of the Skills@Work Challenge in Azerbaijan.

QUOTE

Junior Achievement provides teachers, and schools with concrete programmes, and allows students to learn how to put theory into practice and to understand what entrepreneurship is about. In this way students gain self-confidence and motivation, become proactive and learn how to work in a team. This is an important investment in Europe's future.

--- Jose Manuel Barroso,
President of the European Commission
