Azerbaijani students from the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy and Baku School #95 advanced to the finals of the 14th Annual HP Global Business Challenge – a prestigious economics and business competition conducted by Junior Achievement Worldwide. The final match will be held in Sao Paolo, Brazil, on August 16-20. In Azerbaijan, the contest is a part of the School Economics Education Program (SEE), funded by StatoilHydro Azerbaijan, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Chevron Khazar, Baker & McKenzie, the American Chamber of Commerce, and Bakcell, and implemented by Junior Achievement Azerbaijan.
On July 10 – 10.00 am, the finalist students will receive certificates of achievement at the reception at the Ministry of Education by the Minister, Dr. Misir Mardanov. The representatives from StatoilHydro Azerbaijan, USAID, and Chevron Khazar along with other business community representatives will participate at the ceremony. All interested media representatives are invited to participate at the event.
Since 2000, JA Azerbaijan has supported hundreds of Azerbaijani students to participate in national and international business competitions. HP Global Business Challenge competition is based on a computer program that allows teams of high school and college students to act as chief executive officers of virtual manufacturing companies and compete to earn the highest performance index. The teams make decisions that affect the profitability and sustainability of their virtual company and attempt to outperform their competitors in profit, sales and market share. They set prices, determine production levels, and invest in capital, plan marketing, charitable giving, and research and development budgets. Started in February, this year’s competition involved 300 teams participating worldwide. After two elimination rounds, eight teams representing Azerbaijan, China, Russia, Poland and Kazakhstan progressed to the finals, which will determine the Global Business Challenge winner of 2009.
Azerbaijani students, the participants of Junior Achievement programs, are successful in the JA-HP Global Business Challenge since 2005 – 8th place (2005), 3rd place (2006), 1st place (2007), and 6th place (2008).
