Business Professionals Teach SEE Students Entrepreneurship
Date published: Dec 18 2007
2006 >>

Junior Achievement Azerbaijan started the "Student Companies" project within the School Economic Education program (SEE) for 2006/2007 academic year. "Student Companies" seeks to bring a practical understanding of entrepreneurship to Azerbaijani secondary and high school students and helps them to apply their theoretical economics knowledge and entrepreneurship skills by creating business plans for running a private company. With the support and guidance of volunteer consultants from the local business community, "Student Companies" project provides basic economic and business education for students. By organizing and creating an actual business plan, students not only learn how businesses function, but also virtually create their personal business, become shareholders and the members of their company's board, where they make business decisions, work out business plans and solve financial problems.

Beginning October 2006, 140 students from Baku, Ganje, Sumqayit, Goychay, and Mingechevir competed with each other on economic knowledge and decision-making during the project's first stage. Out of these participants, eighty students in 16 teams succeeded to the project's next stage, which is the online training on business management and business plan writing by four mentors, the professionals from Garadagh Cement, KCA Deutag and Junior Achievement Azerbaijan. Each mentor will train four teams and select one most successful team to present the business plan during the project's finals.

Below is the list of schools that participate in the online training and their business mentors:

Baku School #164, #275, #95, and Elitar Lyceum - Mentor: Mr. Uwe Koehler, Garadagh Cement

Baku School #189, #53, Mingechevir School #3, Goychay School #3 - Mentor: Ms. Laman Husseynova, Garadagh Cement

Baku School #132, #220, Sumqayit School #15, Ganje School #2 - Mentor: Mr. Ramin Isayev, KCA Deutag

Mingechevir School #1, Ganje School #11, #18, Goychay School #9 - Mentor: Mr. Seymur Hajiyev, Junior Achievement Azerbaijan

The winning-team will receive the opportunity to participate in JA Internship Program in summer 2007.

QUOTE

Junior Achievement provides teachers, and schools with concrete programmes, and allows students to learn how to put theory into practice and to understand what entrepreneurship is about. In this way students gain self-confidence and motivation, become proactive and learn how to work in a team. This is an important investment in Europe's future.

--- Jose Manuel Barroso,
President of the European Commission
