Starting July 16 the Community Economic Education Program (COMEEP) brought nine successful program participants to job places in Baku, Ganje and Yevlakh to learn about careers first-hand. COMEEP started in 2006 with the support from British Petroleum and partner companies and is implemented by Junior Achievement Azerbaijan. The program provides advanced economic and business training to emerging business representatives and community members in six Central and Western regions of Azerbaijan.
The most successful training participants applied for the internship opportunity with Junior Achievement Azerbaijan partner companies in June. Following thorough evaluation process nine COMEEP beneficiaries received the opportunity to participate in one-week to one-month job shadow with Kapital Bank, one of the largest local banks, and the Pragma Corporation, a US-based private consulting firm. The internship program took the participants into the work place to learn about careers. Each person had a career advisor of the employees of hosting companies. Throughout this period the participants observed how economics, problem-solving and other basic skills, teamwork are used each day on the job.
During one-week internship at Pragma Corporation the advisors led the participants to company sites, organized meetings with clients, taught specific marketing and sales strategies used in the firm, introduced to departments and took the participants to staff meetings. During extensive one-month internship with Kapital Bank the participants learned about the banks activities in Azerbaijan, its accounting, documentation, credit and loan, reporting, human resources and public relations procedures, inter-department work and IT structure. Saleh Davudov from Sighirli village in Kurdamir says: I am an accountant myself. However, I obtained plenty of skills and knowledge on deposits, credits, interest rates that are top important for me in my work. This knowledge is crucial when our company will apply for micro-credits. Another intern from Yevlakh, Eldaniz Mammadov commented on the internship program and COMEEP activities as a kick-off for business activities in our region. As he notes: Up to these trainings we felt passiveness, which absolutely comes from lack of knowledge and skills. Thanks to COMEEP training my fellow villagers are becoming more involved in market research and explore ways to enter it. The interns returned home on August 16 and continue participate in COMEEP activities.
