On October 27, 2006, at Park Inn Hotel in Baku, Junior Achievement Azerbaijan hosted a press conference dedicated to the School Economic Education Program (SEE) students' successful participation in the international competitions and the internship program. SEE is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and private business companies since 2003. The program provides business and economic education in Azerbaijan's secondary schools through innovative teaching methodology and practical experience.
This year, SEE activities expanded to additional 50 schools in seven regions thus brining economic and business education into communities of 180 schools in Azerbaijan's twenty regions. Overall 25,000 students and more than 300 teachers benefited from the program's training sessions on economics, entrepreneurship, management and ethics. Nine SEE students learned careers on job sites through the JA Internship Program with Statoil Azerbaijan, Exxon Mobil Azerbaijan Operating Company LLC, McDermott Caspian Contractors Inc., KCA Deutag Azerbaijan Ltd., and Bank Nikoil. 150 students examined their business decision-making skills at the prestigious Hewlett Packard Global Business Challenge, an annual competition conducted by Junior Achievement Worldwide and sponsored by Hewlett Packard Corporation. SEE student-team from Zangi Lyceum in Baku competed in the contest's finals, held in the United States on August 14-19, 2006 and became the world's Third.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Joan Polaschik, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission at US Embassy, expressed USAID's support to economic education in Azerbaijan and extended congratulations to Azerbaijani people "for having students who succeeded in boosting Azerbaijan's image in the recognized international business competition." Mr. Farzali Qadirov, the Head of Strategic Planning Department at the Ministry of Education, highly appreciated the US Government's and JA's efforts in providing economic and business education in Azerbaijan. Mr. Qadirov also noted the Ministry of Education will continue providing assistance to SEE program. Mr. Kerry Cosby, the member of JAA Board of Directors and Country Director for Project Harmony, remarked SEE efforts in raising professionals for Azerbaijan's economy. He encouraged the students to be active in program activities and said "education is not limited by school or books, and even a lecture of an expert can give as much as working experience in a company."
Mr. Vusal Khanlarov, JAA Executive Director, concluded the event by expressing gratitude to USAID and international business companies for supporting JA programs in Azerbaijan. Ms. Polaschik, Mr. Qadirov and Mr. Khanlarov awarded the students and representatives of JAA partner companies with certificates of appreciation.
