October 2011 – Garadagh Cement OJSC and Junior Achievement Azerbaijan hosted the Management and Economics Competition for 5 schools in Sahil and Umid settlements. The initiative is a part of the School Business Education Program (SBE), implemented by Garadagh Cement OJSC and Junior Achievement Azerbaijan in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education.
10 teams from schools #273, #294, #228, #319 and boarding school #9 competed within two groups. During the contest, the participants were in CEO roles of student companies and simulated “business quarters,” while making decisions on price, production, marketing, capital investment, and research and development, and considering market conditions. The impact of the decisions leads to the success or failure of each student company.
After intensive six rounds student-teams from schools #319 and #228 became the winners in each group. The event concluded with awarding participants and the winning teams with gifts from Garadagh Cement OJSC.
“I consider JA Titan as a very effective tool in increasing student’s leadership and logical thinking skills. I enjoyed my participation in competition and would like to thank Junior Achievement for opportunity to examine our skills and teamwork,” Arzu Gurbanova, school #319’s student, says. “Besides entrepreneurship and competitiveness, the competition raises intellectual capabilities of students and helps them to make rational and reasoned decisions,” shares Aysel Mirzazade, 10th grade student of school #228.
Started in October 2010, the School Business Education Program provides economic and business education to 940 high school students at the age of 15-17. The program covers six schools in Sahil – schools #253, #273, #228, #319, and boarding school #9 – and Umid school #294. Within the initiative, Junior Achievement Azerbaijan trained 6 teachers from these schools to teach economics and entrepreneurship, and conducted extra-curricular business competitions and entrepreneurship trainings using the innovative materials and methodology.
