Junior Achievement Azerbaijan had a great pleasure of cooperating with BP and partners, StatoilHydro, McDermott Caspian Contractors, and KCA Deutag within the Student Internship Program 2008. The project designed to provide hands-on work-readiness skills and help the participants decide about their careers, placed eight JA students in work environment with business professionals. During the one-week experience at StatoilHydro, McDermott, and KCA Deutag the students explored the companies’ business values, available professions, and business ethics.
The students were interviewed and selected by the hosting companies from the pool of the Student Companies program (project funded by BP and partner companies) and Business Ethics essay contest (supported by StatoilHydro) started their internship with introduction to the companies’ departments staff and their responsibilities. Followed by their business mentors – the employees of hosting companies – the participants explored skills they will use in career assessment, resume writing, and developing personal action plan for the post-internship period.

“During this job shadow program we learned that correct self-evaluation is crucial in making career choices,” writes Leyla Abdullayeva,
Baku
School #116 student, in her workbook. Another student from
Baku
School #203, Samir Aliyev says: “We compared what we learnt at school with the working process; in addition to job experience, this program teaches the effective communication, proper working behavior, ability to consider others’ opinion and to be understood.”
Samira Abdullayeva, the mentor from KCA Deutag notes “the Student Internship Program is a good opportunity for companies to encourage the high school students to assess their skills and knowledge using career advises they obtain to make mature decisions.” She recommends hosting JAA students as “Junior Achievement students come in for the internship program with solid business knowledge. It is mutually rewarding experience for both students and the mentors, who get to teach somebody while in the office.”
At the end of the program, all students and business mentors received certificates. Along with the lifelong experience, the students obtained important contacts and mentors potential cadre for future consideration.
