Throughout October 27-28, the School Economic Education Program students discussed business ethics, cross-cultural understanding and the cores of business management with their peers from Central Asian and South Caucasian countries. Conducted in Karagaly, Kazakhstan, the Global Business Ethics (GBE) conference brought together twenty students, the winners of the international essay competition, and program administrators.
GBE is funded by the United States Agency for International Development and administered by Junior Achievement Worldwide. The twelve-week course engages the students from around the world to debate and discuss ethical dilemmas. Each session results in the International Essay Contest, the winners of which participate in the Annual Business Ethics Conference. Since 2004, more than 1,000 Azerbaijani high-school students have explored business and cultural values through the USAID-funded School Economic Education Program.
This year two students from Lenkaran and Sumqayit, Ilkiz Iskenderli and Ceyhun Mansumov represented their country as the best essay authors. The students joined series of discussions, training sessions, interactive games and lectures on similarities and differences in ethical understanding of cultures. Ilkiz and Ceyhun also demonstrated their presentation on business culture in Azerbaijan and informed the conference participants about the current situation of Azerbaijani market and employment relations. "We debated with our peers on the relations between an employer and an employee, corporate ethics, and flexible policy of transnational corporations... We also brainstormed complex ethical problems' solution," tells Ilkiz upon his return to his school.
JA Azerbaijan will continue facilitating the Global Business Ethics program throughout 2006-2007. 416 students from Baku, Sumqayit, Turkan village, Barda, Ismayilli and Yevlakh schools participate in program’s Fall-2006 Session that will continue through December.
