Plaza, the United States Agency of International Development (USAID), Chevron Khazar Ltd. and StatoilHydro Azerbaijan signed the Memorandum of Understanding to support the implementation of the School Economics Education (SEE) Program by Junior Achievement Azerbaijan in 230 schools of
Azerbaijan in 2008-2010. Within the Global Development Alliance (GDA), established between USAID, StatoilHydro and Chevron, the Memorandum envisages the implementation of SEE program activities that support business and economic education in
Azerbaijan at the high school level.
Opening the event, Vusal Khanlarov, JA Azerbaijan Executive Director, introduced the program that will bring entrepreneurship, work-readiness skills, and financial literacy to thousands of students across
Azerbaijan. “They [the students] will have the opportunity to study fundamental and international economics through the JAA Economics curriculum, examine business management through the Student Companies project, learn ethics in business, and to gain real-work experience through the Job Shadow Program,” explained Mr. Khanlarov. SEE also gives students the opportunity to compete in the National Management and Economic Competition and international HP Global Business Challenge.
“By supporting School Economics Education program, USAID and its partners are investing in the future of the
Azerbaijan,” noted Mr. Scott Taylor, USAID Country Director, in his speech. “After learning the principles of free market system and understanding basic business and entrepreneurial skills, students are better prepared to assume stewardship of
Azerbaijan’s economy in a way that promotes consistent and stable economic growth.”
Mr. Olav Skalmeraas, Vice-President of StatoilHydro Azerbaijan, and Bob Dastmalchi, Country Manager for Chevron Khazar Ltd., spoke about the contribution and commitment their companies made to JAA’s successful programs that in return strengthens economic education in Azerbaijan. “Education is the key to economic development for all countries; therefore we put a lot of emphasis on encouraging young people to educate and be prepared to enter future business life,” noted Mr. Skalmeraas.
Event ended with Memorandum signing ceremony and interview session with local media agencies.
